If you are a glass artist or admirer in the Bay area and you need to get your fix consider SFSU. With 2 classes and 2 blowslots a week the access is fantastic. The class is available through the College of Extended Learning so anyone can take it, and the price is right.

This really blows! I joined this tribe to get involved with other glassblowers to exchange information and ideas, but I see all the posts are over a year old! I thought it would be nice to discuss technique, colors, equipment, or just personal experience. Is anyone interested?

I just moved to the Bay Area from Philadelphia PA. While I was in Philly I took an intro to glass blowing class and really loved it and now that I have a little extra time, I was wondering if there was a hot shop in the area where I could take classes or maybe even apprentice?

Hello everyone!

After my experience working with metalcasting and sculpture, some demos I have seen with glass, seeing friends who work in glass, and of course, my belief that glass is among the most beautiful sculptural media, I have been looking to glass blowing/molding as the next step in my career. So I was wondering if there are any really good schools out there that would have quality instruction and small classes...kind of like an old-time school... It would be best if they had metalworking too, since I would like to further that as well. Any advice would help, thanks!

Im 23 years old and just graduated from Salisbury University with a Bachelors in Fine Arts with a concentration in hot glass. Looking for someone who will let me continue to learn from them. Started studying glass way late in my college career and often worked alone so I feel that i'm not as learned as I feel I should be with a degree. I'm currently living in Salisbury, well Fruitland, but I am willing to go pretty much anywhere.

Hi all, Has anyone out there have experience compressing oxygen from medical concentraters. Can I use any oil less compresser? Do I need special tanks? If anyone has tried this please let me know how it worked for you. We live on an island and our tanks of oxygen here are very expensive. We are flame workers with a couple of GTTs.
Help us afford to glass blow.

glass tech training?

So...

i've been blowing for six years now and in the name of laying down some skills for the future when I open my shop, I want to pick up some skills in furnace building, kiln building etc...i know a little (welding, laying brick) but we're not talking nearly enough to have any degree of self-sufficiency with my own (future) equipment. Especially - electrical wiring, gas and oxygen assemblies, ventilation, refractory materials, comparitive advantages - Nada. Zilch.

...i know a lot of people pick up these skills through working in shops, but the guys i work with here in Seattle (three or four different studios) tend to need to get those repairs done as soon as possible when something goes down (can't blame em!) but in reality this translates into an unwillingness to waste time showing me how to do this stuff. You can make the argument that over the long run it would help them out if I knew more, but try telling that to someone who's panicking because the furnace just blew a rod and there are orders piling up!...in any case, I've brought it up and been gently rebuffed.

I own and have read Halem's "Glass Notes", but there is an assumption that the reader has a basic set of knowledge and skills which I don't possess. I'd be pretty ill-advised to follow the easy assembly instructions without a more comprehensive understanding of WHAT and WHY.

Any advice? How have other people here picked up their glass tech skills? Are there any existing programs geared towards this, or any university programs that include this as a major component? I know Pratt here in Seattle did a furnace-building workshop, but $1500 for a three or four-day workshop seemed a little too steep for me, and besides, I need more than just a few days.

glass artist BJ Katz - Meltdown Glass Art (Chandler, AZ)

I saw an article in the newspaper today about a local Chandler, Arizona glass artist:

Artist to design glass mural for police, fire substation

http://www.azcentral.com/php-bin/clicktrack/print.php?referer=http://www.azcentral.com/community/chandler/articles/0802cr-artist02Z6.html

Out of 64 artist proposals that were reviewed recently by residents, police and fire staff, and local artists, Chandler artist BJ Katz, owner of Meltdown Glass Art & Design, was selected to produce a glass mural that will decorate the ceremonial flag court at the new Desert Breeze Police and Fire Community Facility.

Katz, a celebrated artist who has done projects around the nation ... she will travel to Germany to work with Derek's Glass Studio to fabricate the mural. She expects to be finished by late spring.
Katz studied glass art for six months at Pilchuk, a glass school in Washington state founded by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly.
I liked the different textures and treatments of glass shown in her online product catalog

Kiln-cast glass:
Meltdown Glass specializes in the art and science of kiln-fired glass. Compared to other forms of glass art, kiln-cast glass is a relatively new medium that developed only recently with the advent of kiln technology. The process involves placing raw plates of glass over one-off molds and heating the glass to approximately 1500 degrees. The result is a deeply textured glass surface with amazing optical and tactile qualities. All steps of this process are performed by hand. Kiln-cast glass can be tempered to meet or exceed safety codes and is easily maintained. for more information on our process, see kiln-cast glass under about meltdown on our website.

Products:
Meltdown Glass offers an extensive product line for art and architectural glass applications. This includes 32 standard textures that can be cast in any glass thickness, over 50 cataloged color options, and numerous treatment options. Some options include sand-blasing, fused metals, and over 20 different colors of iridescent dichroic glass. Besides these products, Meltdown Glass has endless capabilities for custom works of art and architectural glass.

General facts:
Meltdown Glass Art & Design was started in 1993 by glass artist BJ Katz. Since it's inception, Meltdown Glass has been in a state of constant growth and expansion, and has recently moved into a new state-of-the-art facility located in Chandler, Arizona. Currently Meltdown Glass employs seven full-time staff and serves the art, architecture and design communities all over North America.

Hey everyone, new here. I have been blowing glass for a few years, but only get to do so once a week (if that). I am looking for a way to totally live and breathe glass for awhile. I am interested in being someone's apprentice-anything to be around glass on a more full time basis. I would like to do this without spending a ton of cash--ie a university program. I would gladly be someone's assistant to earn shop time--whatever.
Does anyone have any ideas? Oh yeah, I am in Missouri, but will gladly move anywhere in the world--venice would be amazing (although I hear they don't allow women to blow there-is that true?)
Also, someone once told me a great way to sharpen technique was to get a job at some sort of factory--anyone know anything about this? The who, what, when, where and how?
Thanks, any advice is greatly appreciated!!!!

Need some custom work done

A friend of mine asked me to look around for a glass blower to do a "simple" project for her.

I was helping her move some stuff around her house tonight, and while she was moving a corner shelf out of the way, one of her fave pieces fell off....

Essentially it is a hand blown glass cylinder w/some really neat dye work inlaid in the glass. From this cylinder a [seperate piece] glass globe with a small hole in the top and a "handle" (for lack of a better term) hung.

Lets call this piece a lamp ladle. The decorative glass cylinder itself is fine. However the lamp ladle part broke. I dont know much about glass, but I would say that the lamp part was probably about 22 gauge (as in metal gauges). The stem that came up to hold the lamp part inside the cylinder was about 8 gauge.

Anyways I can provide a glass artist with the funds if they are willing to form a replacement part to my specifications. My friend would contract this work to the original artist who made the piece. However the artist lives some 6 hours from her.

Any help is appreciated. Especially if this replacement piece can be picked up local to the Washington D.C. metro area. If not insured shipping is an acceptable option. Thanks in advance.

I am sorry I had been away from tribe for a while. I will use this post as a place for introductions. I would also like to thank you all for joining this tribe.

I became addicted when I took a weekend workshop in Boston a little over a year ago and then I followed up with a three-week intensive workshop in Tucson last May. I then took the continuing class all last semester.
